Operating systems and database management systems should be configured so that all access to files and directories is logged. This practice promotes accountability and provides a trail of evidence in the event that a forensic investigation should be conducted in the future. Access logs themselves must be highly protected ideally, they should be stored in a different storage system than the data whose access they are logging. Access logs should not be alterable, even by database administrators and system administrators, so that no one will be able to erase their tracks should they decide to tamper with sensitive information and then attempt to hide the evidence afterward. Access logging is only effective if someone actually examines the logs. Because this can be a time-consuming activity, many organizations utilize alert-generating tools that send e-mail or pager alerts to key personnel when certain audit log entries (such as unauthorized access attempts) appear. These alerts permit personnel to act upon anomalous events when they occur.

Battery charging is the reverse of discharging. Figure 9-2 again shows you how the key parameters change: Ampere-Hours This is the opposite of the discharging case, except that you have to put back slightly more than you took out (typically 105 to 115 percent more) because of losses, heating, etc. The area under the line increases linearly versus time from its fully discharged value to its fully charged value. Specific Gravity Specific gravity increases wildly over time as a battery is charging, so making specific gravity measurements during the charging cycle is not a good idea. At the early part of the charging cycle, specific gravity increases slowly because the charging chemical reaction process is just starting. Specific gravity increases rapidly as the sulfuric acid concentration builds, and gassing near the end of the cycle contributes to its rise. Cell Voltage Voltage also increases wildly over time as a battery is charging, so making voltage measurements during the charging cycle is not a good idea either. Notice cell voltage jumps up immediately to its natural 2.1-volt value; slowly increases until 80 percent state-of-charge (approximately 2.35 volts); increases rapidly until 90 percent state-of-charge (approximately 2.5 volts); and then builds slowly to its full charging value of 2.58 volts.

The North American and the ITU versions differ distinctly in the display of the noise level being measured. The ITU versions display the level in dBm consistently with the level measurement, except they usually provide sensitivity as great as 90 dBm. The North American standard created a new reference at 90 dBm and called it 0 dBrn. An instrument measuring a noise signal of level 0 dBm through a C-Message filter would, in a North American version, display 90 dBrn. It would be referred to as 90 dBrnC, with the C meaning the noise level was being made via the C-Message filter. The standards also provide for a noise-to-ground or unbalanced measurement, which is performed simply by paralleling the input of the twisted-pair cable and reading the level with respect to instrument ground. This gives a measure of the unbalance of the cable.
